Businesses rely on applications to operate and compete. And, not too differently, applications rely on transactions to execute and function. Comprised of transactions, an application’s performance is a byproduct of how well each transaction within it is coded and how efficiently it executes.
The more we’ve worked with application owners and application support teams, the more we’re seeing an ominous and inconspicuous culprit buried inside the applications businesses rely on: the “chatty” transaction.
As the name indicates, a chatty transaction is just that: chatty. It talks a lot. More than it needs to. These transactions run excessively and make exorbitant calls between an application and its corresponding database. And the more these transactions connect to the database, the more they hurt the speed, efficiency, and quality of the very application they’re designed to support.

Change – unprecedented rates of change – is the defining characteristic of modern IT environments. And not just any change. Disruptive, innovative, and powerful change. The type of change that alters markets and redefines industries. DevOps is one such benefactor of this unprecedented IT transformation.
DevOps, a union between development and operations, has emerged as a modern-day software development approach that attempts to fuse software engineers who develop new products with the IT operations professionals who deploy and manage said products.
It’s no surprise today’s businesses rely on web and mobile apps to form their product portfolios. More specifically, they rely on these apps to connect with customers and grow their business. Understanding the intricacies and process of revenue optimization requires a glance at some real world examples. Since the concept of revenue optimization was pioneered by the airline industry, we’ll start there. I’m sure almost everyone has had the experience of sitting on an airplane and asking the person next to them how much they paid for their ticket. Rarely, if ever, would the answer be the same. The reason? Ticket prices are determined by a variety of factors, including:
- When the ticket was purchased (2 weeks in-advance, or no advance)
- The class of service (economy, business, or first-class)
- Special seat and flight accommodations
Relying on sophisticated analytics and data-driven tactics, airlines (and other data-reliant businesses) are now using revenue optimization in order to boost top-line growth.

Remember Super Storm Sandy? The deadliest and most destructive hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season, and the second-costliest hurricane in United States history. We do. As a New York-based business, it’s been excruciatingly difficult to witness firsthand the torment and devastation the natural disaster inflicted on our friends, neighbors, and peers.
While it’s been half-a-year since Sandy made catastrophic landfall on New York, the fallout is far from over. Preliminary estimates assess damage at nearly $75 billion, a total surpassed only by Hurricane Katrina. As members in the local business community, we know the reality. We know it because we’ve been in constant communication with customers, partners and friends about the toll Sandy took on their respective businesses and families.
While many businesses have made full recoveries, others have not. Some we’ve talked to even lost their data centers during the super storm and are now running out of back-up data centers while they relocate/rebuild their primary data centers. As a result of the sobering stories we’ve heard and the brutal challenges still facing many of our neighboring businesses, we’re launching a program aimed at assisting these companies with a FREE Application Performance Assessment.
