| The problem |
 |
Businesses today rely on a multitude of interactions between customers, employees and partners that occur at any given moment within a company's IT system. Each interaction represents a single IT-provided service – such as trades, balance inquiries, purchase orders and dealer updates – and is referred to as a business transaction. Each business transaction is made up of complex sets of components operating across multiple tiers and involving different stakeholders (IT infrastructure, applications and business). Visibility and control of these transactions, from both the business and IT perspectives, are essential to the success of the business.
As demand for new, flexible IT services increases and the complexity of operating these services grows, enterprises are finding it more and more difficult to assure business service delivery. Despite advanced planning and testing of the IT applications providing business transactions, too many IT projects continue to fail, or suffer from time and cost overruns due to performance issues. Also, production systems that have already been deployed are often plagued by inadequate service levels, meaning that IT professionals are constantly running around putting out fires. Therefore significant resource over-provisioning is prevalent in the industry, but, in most cases, it does not solve the problem.
Current testing, production monitoring, tuning and diagnostic tools are insufficient because they lack true business service intelligence; 24x7, end-to-end, cross-tier view of transaction activity and because they are manual and reactive by nature. At best, such solutions respond to problems that have already developed, primarily by alerting an already overburdened IT staff. Also, time-consuming investigative work is often necessary because identifying the source of a specific problem is difficult, with just a few clues provided to point IT in the right direction.
At the same time, today's IT managers are being pressed to use existing resources more efficiently, contain or cut budgets and still commit to ever more stringent Service Level Agreements (SLAs). From the business perspective, the reality is lost revenues, dissatisfied customers and an inability to recoup investments in IT initiatives.
The primary reason for this situation – and the lack of adequate solutions – is that IT systems share two unaddressed technical flaws: They obscure cross-tier transaction visibility and they provide the same level of service to all transactions, regardless of business importance.

OpTier is an innovator and leader in a unique class of solution that fills the gap in existing IT management offerings. OpTier's Business Transaction Management™ technology delivers end-to-end visibility and control of all business transactions. OpTier solutions address the challenges described above in test and production environments by automatically mapping business services to IT infrastructure. They track and monitor all business transactions – across all tiers, all the time – in order to create and maintain a complete profile of transaction activity in terms of time and resources. Based on this real-time transaction monitoring capability, OpTier solutions actively identify and isolate performance problems as they develop, and before users can be affected, thus minimizing the cost and time to resolve them. All the information about mapping business service to IT resources is collected, generating business service intelligence, for more effective testing, capacity planning, provisioning and decision-making. Management of transactions starts with monitoring them, but that's just the beginning...
OpTier further lets organizations dynamically prioritize transaction resource allocation based on business needs, especially under peak loads. For example, a higher priority – resulting in faster cross-tier processing – would be assigned to a business-critical transaction such as an online customer account query, and a lower priority to an internal background report that is not particularly time-sensitive.
OpTier helps IT assess and improve its business effectiveness as well as optimize its investment in infrastructure and resources. And this is all done on an ongoing basis, without having to correlate events, change application code or use any additional instrumentation. OpTier solutions provide value across the application lifecycle, from pre-deployment testing through production and operations, helping a business realize the full potential of its IT investment.
